Cabling is like a foundation of a building. It’s built once and it has to be rock solid. If the foundation is poorly built the house will fall over; if it’s spot on then the house will stand for centuries. It’s exactly the same with cabling.

As with the foundation of a building a lot of factors have to be considered before any work can begin. Designing a good, solid network is a big job. You have to know how much data you are going to pump through these cables, how many nodes are going to connect to the network, what type of data is going to be flowing there. Also you absolutely must keep data cables and power cables separated as power cables produce electromagnetic fields that don’t work too well with data cables. Also co-location with big power plants or factories can change the type of cables you should use. The best location of patch panels and network switches has to be calculated based on the size of the installation. For example horizontal cabling is done using regular Ethernet cables, but vertical cabling should be fiber optics for better performance.
